The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate that thinking about economic life does not necessarily mean considering it in terms of political economy, as merely determining the forms of our collective life—whether for the better, as viewed by liberals, or more often, for the worse, in critical thought. Economic life is also a domain of our spiritual and cultural life, reflecting part of who we are. Thinking about economic life is therefore a gateway to something far more fundamental and general than the economy. This possibility will be explored through the perspectives of Georg Simmel and Emmanuel Levinas.

Michel Olivier – is a Program Director at the Collège International de Philosophie and teaches at Paris Nanterre University. Initially holding degrees in mathematics and economics, and with professional experience as an entrepreneur and investor, he soon turned to philosophy. He completed a doctoral thesis on the issue of the ineffable in the philosophy of language and has published a few books and collective works : Peirce, la pensée et le réel (Hermann, 2013), Quine (Les belles lettres, 2015), Totalité et infini, une oeuvre de ruptures (Manucius, 2017), De Bergson à Levinas, le sens de l’humain (to be published soon, Presses Universitaires de Nanterre). He also contributed to collectives works about Jean-Francois Lyotard, Karl Polanyi and Emmanuel Levinas.  His current research focuses on the tension between economic life and forms of collective life.
